11:30 pm
>> kirk: if you're a miami hurricane game this has wn a tough stretch the last couple of years with some of the issues off the field that they're dealing with, potential or impending sanctions. just kind of a dark cloud hovering over the program. and i think that part of it is the toughest part when you're just waiting. because that can affect recruiting and the vibe of the program as much as anything. i think al golden and his staff doing the best they can t stay positive, continue to try and recruit. there is a lot of young players on this team, they'll be very, very good down the road. >> brent: freeman to the 30 yard line. we take you to a time line and show you what herbie is talking about. t ncaa launched an investigation and this year, ray ray armstrong
11:31 pm
would have been an outstanding member of the secondary was dismissed. but the penalties may not be until after 2013 signing day. al golden is not involved in anything involving what is going on here with illegal payments to players. in fact, he didn't know about it when he took the job and then the scandal hit. we'll have to see what kind of penalties they hand out. end zone, deflected. and that was gunter. ladarius gunter out of montgomery, alabama, redshirt sophomore he's played very well. >> kirk: but e.j. manuel what are you thinking? you got a safety back there and float the ball up in the air? this is the thing that drives florida state fans crazy. deon bush is back there, almost had to call a fair catch that time waiting for an interest every sep --
11:32 pm
interception. >> brent: long field goal. a 48-yarder. looks good. 26-13. closing in, up by 13.
11:33 pm
11:34 pm
>> brent: aerial coverage provided by goodyear. inspi inspiring, goodyear more driven. so there you can see that miami actually had a ten-point lead before florida state kicked that field dwool and then that stretch for the 'noles, 16 unanswered and here in the fourth quarter they put up ten more. and they appear headed for the w right now. unless the 'canes' quarterback
11:35 pm
stephen morris can mount a-reminder, next saturday, all eyes will be on norman, oklahoma. the irish 7-0 for the first time since 2002 beating byu in south bend today. oklahoma big winner othver kans tonight, averaging better than 43 points a game. i don't believe the irish have allowed a rushing touchdown this year unless i missed a rushing touchdown by byu today and i could have. i apologize if i'm wrong about that but their run defense has been tough. but landry jones find holes in secondary. >> kirk: that's the one thing everyone wants to see how well notre dame's secondary does against a deem with a quarterback and good grouch wide
11:36 pm
service. their figures to be two big tests for that defense this week, coming week with oklahoma and at the end of the year with matt barkley and that great grou group of receivers matt has. >> brent: 6:13 to go here. and morris throws a strike to that far side. hurns is pushed out of bounds. >> kirk: look at mark stoops at the top of the screen. the great defensive coaches they coach like it's 0-0. game just started. only thing he needs is a set of pads to get out there and play. >> brent: deflected. third down now. smith deflected that ball. would you look at him -- we will
11:37 pm
see his two brothers, mike and bob, out on that sideline in norman and the directors like them, too, they're fun on the sideline. he'll give you an earful. were you watching that game with me when one of the officials had both of the stoops brothers. >> kirk: double team. we kid about mark and his energy but you and i both know he's one of the top defensive coaches, one of the great coordinators in the country. has a great defense on display again tonight. >> brent: caught. there is a penalty flag. dorsett made the catch. and there is a penalty flag. when you think of some of the marquee jobs that will open up at the end of this season, wouldn't be surprised if mark stoops doesn't wind up with one of them. he served his team well as an assistant coach. >> kirk: he's paid his dues and got outside of the cocoon. made a decision to leave mike when mike was a head coach in arizona.
11:38 pm
he came down here to be part of the staff with jimbo fisher. and he's shown he can do it on his own, doing a great job. >> brent: there is the defense that mark stoops has orchestrated this year and it is good. and our crack stats man george hill says byu did not rush for a touchdown in south bend today. so the irish, very impressive run defense. they are going to need it. be all hands on deck against oklahoma. sliding reception down there by scott, 5:24 to go. i think you put your finger on it that miami just did not quite have the veteran manpower enough to stand up here tonight to the 'noles. >> kirk: no. i think they took advantage of some opportunities early to hang
11:39 pm
around. stephen morris, see what he does on fourth down but he's really fought through some pain and injuries. >> brent: sideline and mike james he score d a hurricanes touchdown back in the first. stephen morris deserves an awful lot of credit for the gutty performance tonight. >> kirk: we're starting to put a bow on this but if they pick up the pace here and try to get the ball downfield and try to score which will be tough for him to do, still an onside kick way from having a shot. >> brent: the price of admission. >> kirk: i love it. >> brent: the stoops brothers out of youngstown, ohio. cardinal moony thi mooney high . i bet once upon a time when you talk to bob -- if you know
11:40 pm
williams making the play, we're talking about the heisman. i'll tell you right now there is no question about who the coach of the year is right now. and that's bill snyder. that job that he has done again with kansas state is simply -- he's a hall of famer, folks. no doubt about it. >> kirk: i don't know what is more impressive what he did the first time in building it up or when he wept away ant away and . >> referee: personal foul on the offense number 46. dead ball. personal foul on the defense number 21. penal penalty's offset, third down. >> brent: so walford was guilty for the hurricanes. >> kirk: when left, think about how far they dropped off. they were irrelevant in the big 12. he comes back and of course, he's got a great quarterback in
11:41 pm
collin klein, they are a lot more than collin klein. it's his system, his team. >> brent: they had to develop collin. he's not a natural quarterback. >> kirk: you and i had him a couple times last year. this guy was doing a lot of great things last year for kansas state. >> brent: stechb was in deep trouble that time. good pressure, lawrence stample was in on him for the 'noles. >> brent: this >> kirk: this is where the depth of florida state and asking about the guys they can rotate in despite injuries, they are rotating seven, eight, nine different guys con staptly in and out of the game to try to maintain how farther able to play and how fresh they're able to play. same thing with the linebackers and just doing a really good job of rotating different bodies in there. >> brent: the 'canes will go
11:42 pm
foirt. penalty flag and false start. >> referee: false start, offense, number 65, five-yard penalty, fourth down. >> brent: that's a fine guard by the name of brandon linder. all of the offensive linemen for al golden this year, he's probably been the most consistent. and that's going to back them up and fourth and 20. down here by 13 and golden's going for it. morris is in trouble. wrapped up, werner, the germinator. >> kirk: this will be one for todd mcshay, who is probably sitting at home watching this game, this will give him a chance to break this down for the nfl draft. talk about power and speed and how explosive he can be. that is seantrel henderson
11:43 pm
all-world offensive linemen just thrown into the backfield and used his quickness go around him. >> brent: three tackles, one and a half sacks tonight. now, let's see what jimbo fisher comes up with here. freeman. tailback. right edge. across the 20. as we mentioned, the fighting irish and florida and fighting irish stay undefeated by beating byu back home and now they head to oklahoma as the sooners wrap up a 52-7 victory over the jayhawks tonight and now the unbeaten irish and once-beaten sooners meet in norman next saturday night, 8:00 eastern.
11:44 pm
that's one you don't want to miss. second down and seven. keeps it. out of bounds about the 5 yard line. 3:19 to go. it is a first and goal. >> kirk: we've seen him in the second half do more with his legs than his arm. that time a great, great block by lonnie pryor. and to the outside strong. i hope jimbo fisher gives pryor a special award at the end of the year. unselfish guy. nobody talks about hick when m talk about their offense and he deserves a ton of recognition. >> brent: freeman, outside,
11:45 pm
touchdown. >> kirk: you had a feeling when thompson went down we would see more of freeman even though wilder went in there initially, freeman ten carries, seven yards a touch and two touchdowns coming back to south florida to play in a big game he was fired up to go against former teammates and former friends. >> brent: sophomore. and if chris thompson is going to be lost for a longer period of time because of that injury they'll need him and james wilder. hopkins taps on the extra point. and it is a 20-point lead for the 'noles. >> kirk: great vion. pryor picking up a good block. we've seen this couple of times tonight but freeman. i think it's his vision.
11:46 pm
play is designed to go into the teeth of defense. there is nothing there. and he doesn't give up on the play. another time we see him bounce it to the outside and he's a load. he's undersized because he's only 5'8" but he's about 215 pounds. low center of gravity, tough guy to bring down. >> brent: so there are your bcs standings and get word from some of our friends out in las vegas way that oklahoma will be a strong touchdown favorite over the irish and why not, of course? they're at home. so, they figure to pe all of that. even though the irish are unbeaten. so, there is your bcs standings, your top ten. south carolina, of course, will slip. oregon state playing right now. usc won big, 50-6. and next week, the big one will be in norman, oklahoma with the sooners and the irish.
11:47 pm
2:45 remaining. will take a knee. it will come out on the 25 yard line. and obviously the 'noles are headed for a victory here. your thoughts about their performance? >> kirk: we've got alabama out there, oregon, kansas state, we've got florida out there. we'll have a lot of fun trying to find out who deserves to be where. how about this? how about oregon state? though one is even talking about oregon state. did you see what they did last week in provo with a backup quarterback against byu? destroyed them did you see what byu did today? in south bend? how come oregon state is not even in the discussion? they are a team that's been as consistent as anybody this year. when you start the year off the
11:48 pm
radar it takes a lot of work for people to start to pay attention. but they are another team to think about when you're filling out your form, if you're a voter a thinking who deserves to be in a higher ranking, oregon state, i think is the most undervalued teams in polls. >> brent: one thing about ohio state and any number of upsets but they'll be a heavy favorite to win the acc which would put them on target to come right back down here and play in the bcs orange bowl. so, there is still a big reward for florida state if they can win this conference even though climbing up got number two spot or one spot seems like an enormous mountain. but winning the acc, that's very manageable for this team. >> kirk: can you imagine if florida state were were to win out their conference games and
11:49 pm
somehow florida were to win out? that game at the end of the year it would be huge. >> brent: it would be a big football game. >> kirk: for both teams. >> brent: the problem with florida that they'll have in that situation the next week they got to go into atlanta and play alabama or lsu. >> kirk: right, right. >> brent: for the s.e.c. championship. >> kirk: absolutely. >> brent: always a very, very tough task. >> kirk: meanwhile they'll have miami or duke. >> brent: jimbo has done very, very well against the gators and this year he'll get them in tallahassee. remind everybody to stay tuned for the ford wrap-up. so they trailed by ten points early going. a fumble and a shanked punt. miami jumped ahead but since then it has been all 'noles. >> kirk: no doubt by the. the florida state defense put the clamps down on stephen morris. short field to work with to get
11:50 pm
their points. the 'noles offense still kind of -- >> brent: nice throw by morris. fine pass. very good throw downfield. and johnson making the catch for the 'canes. >> kirk: 'canes still trying to fight to the end here. you love to see that. >> brent: they'll try to stick that in the end zone. drop it in and again they come right back to him. johnson, that is a -- with 1:07 to go, they've got a first and goal here florida state up by 20 and there are some mathmathmetis
11:51 pm
interesting to see what is happening here. james to the 8 yard line. now inside of a minute. time-out has been called now and stephen morris, going to come over to the sideline here. >> kirk: mathematicians are watching this one? >> brent: you betcha. the guys with the eye shades and calculators. let me tell you about it -- >> kirk: i'm telling you november h >> brent: there is a whole world of numbers out there beyond all these fun and games. thinking about miami a little bit and al golden really with the staff, i think they've done a very, very good job. i know it's not showing up in the win/loss column, this will be the third loss in a row,
11:52 pm
first time he's lost two in a row since coming down from temple and now three. going to take time. >> kirk: a lot of youth. you look at their roster and you appreciate the fact that if 18 true freshmen, 21 total playing for this team this year -- >> brent: end zone. touchdown. scott. drove him right down the field. >> sean: stephen morris gave it about all he had tonight. 25 of 43. if you missed it earlier, he's been playing on an ankle that was so bad this week, he didn't practice all week, literally, didn't take a rep in practice. tried to gut it out.
11:53 pm
had a hip flexor on the other leg. led his team on a eight-play drive, took under two minutes and sits in that pocket despite the injuries and gets level as he throws the ball to scott for the touchdown. >> brent: wieclaw tacks on the extra point. scott made a good grab of that, didn't he, in the back of that end zone? well done. young man from melbourne, florida. there is stephen morris. limped into the arena, will walk out with his head high even though they'll lose here. reminder, late local news up next on your abc stations. final 47 seconds. well, i'm sure ryan williams, backup to stephen morris is very
11:54 pm
disappointed, he took all of the reps in practice and a young man that transferred from memphis. he played at miramar high school, led them to a state championship in florida. i'm sure he was counting on playing tonight but you can understand why the coaches wa wanted stephen morris when they saw that he could go. pooch kick. and a penalty and the 'noles ball with 47 seconds. miami's got a couple time-outs. trailing this one by 13. >> referee: ball will be placed at the -- >> kirk: talked about miami but brent for florida state, they win this game and a lot of great opportunities to teach the team about you got guys that did not play like this and expect to win bigger games down the road.
11:55 pm
12 penalties tonight. a lot of mental errors. a lot of mistakes. it's always great to have those lessons when you win game, especially a rivalry game. >> brent: absolutely. so, taking a knee now to end it. and the seminoles will go back to tallahassee having won another game here in miami and that gives them four straight victories in games played here in miami. al golden will dash across the field, shake the hand of his conqueror, jimbo fisher. 33-20 our final score, folks. and next week on saturday night football on abc, notre dame, unbeaten, travels to oklahoma it take on the sooners at 8:00 p.m.
